a miss brainy review: grammys edition!

on the evening of february 15th, i grabbed my comfiest blanket and my half-priced valentine’s day chocolates (come on – you know you bought them, too!), and sat down with my family to watch the biggest night in music, the grammys. broadcasted from the staples center in la, the grammy awards are a huge night for musicians everywhere. and 2016 was no different.

my favourite part of the grammys is that there is always something for everyone! while my parents sang along to the lionel richie tribute (featuring the man himself), my sister and i jammed along to taylor swift’s incredible opening. and of course, you can’t forget the red carpet where everyone gets to play fashion police. my grandfather commented on how ciara showed a little too much skin (that slit though!), my grandmother asked how lady gaga could even wear heels that high, and of course i just had to say how gorgeous selena gomez looked. not only was it a great night for music, but a great night for fashion, too.

but of course, we do have to talk about the music. now, as i said, there were many different outfits at the grammys, and many different colours too, but all i saw was red and white! i felt a little patriotic as some of our stars from home kicked butt. the weeknd, who had seven nominations (including album and record of the year) and won two of those nominations, gave us an awesome performance as was to be expected. starting off with one of the best songs of 2015, can’t feel my face, the weeknd had us all singing along to the hit, when he changed it up a bit and performed an acoustic version of his single in the night. accompanied only by a pianist and a cellist, we saw a very raw and yet still very smooth side of his voice, which left the audience with a standing ovation. and then came the moment where i got to fangirl, and yes before you ask, i am a strong belieber (est 2010), and justin did not disappoint. justin gave us an acoustic version of his latest single, love yourself, which brought us back outside stratford theatre, just a little blond kid and his guitar, singing his heart out. then, bieber hit us with some amazing music, vocals and dance moves as he performed along side skrillex and diplo to where are ü now, the song that won him his first ever grammy that night.

not only did us canadians represent, but there were some other fantastic highlights, too. taylor swift showed us real friendship when she cheered on her best friend, ed sheeran, as he won song of the year for the smash hit, thinking out loud. she also inspired us with her sensational speech about becoming a successful woman in today’s industry. kendrick lamar enraptured us with his all too real performance, and won best rap album of the year. not only did he spit some rhymes for us, but the hamilton musical showed us that colonial times and hip hop songs can go very well together. also, some big names in music showed up as adele wowed us with her new song and my queen, beyoncé graced us with her presence to award bruno mars and mark ronson for their win on uptown funk, the song that insinuated parodies and dance parties everywhere. meghan trainor won her well-deserved award of best new artist and made us all tear up a little bit as she thanked her parents. while the night was full of new music, there were also some classic tributes to fabulous artists, such as david bowie, glenn frey and lionel richie.

after this wonderful night, i was ready to pack up and go to bed when i suddenly remembered – the finale! the closing of the show is always something exciting and fun, but when i quickly turned my head towards the tv, and saw pitbull, my heart sunk a little. don’t get me wrong, i do love mr. worldwide, but he doesn’t really seem like finale material. i internally groaned as he rapped in rapid spanish among half-naked dancing girls, when i squinted my eyes. was i seeing right? sofia vergara? dressed as a cardboard taxi? extremely confused, i watched as she did her job of looking pretty when she disappeared, and then came robin thicke! i don’t think i have ever prayed faster for a song to end, and it did, leaving me very happy and yet still confused. what a night!

how was your grammy night? leave me a comment below!

stay brainy and stay beautiful.

xo, miss brainy.
