i came with this idea for a blog post the other day when i was going out with a friend and was looking for an outfit to wear. i tried on many different things but nothing seemed to look or feel right! even though my friend insisted i looked fine, it was one of those days where everything just felt wrong. i realized that even though you can just wait for “the blues” to pass, there are a few thing you can do to lift up your self-esteem and your mood in general!
here are some things i thought of:
DO… go on a walk! it’s scientifically proven that fresh air gives you more energy and a sharper mind. i personally love being surrounded by nature, and sunlight always makes me a little bit happier. going on a walk will get your muscles moving and your heart pumping, and it’s something that can be adjusted to your endurance levels and personal preferences!
DON’T… stay in bed! it’s not scientifically proven, but i’m 99% sure that staring at your ceiling and wallowing in self-pity will NOT improve your mood! i know from experience that ten more minutes can often turn into hour, which can often turn into most of your day spent in bed. by all means, if you are tired getting a good night’s sleep is necessary. but being productive will not only help you get your work done, it will also raise your energy levels. at that moment sleeping in might seem great, but persevere – you’ll thank me later!
DO… talk to your friends! there’s nothing better than being around people who love and support you. nonetheless, it won’t have the same affect on text as it will in person. going out with your friends can help you de-stress and will lift up your mood!
DON’T… check your social media too much! even if everyone is talking about kim kardashian’s latest selfie: STAY AWAY! you will get caught in a cycle of comparing numbers to measure your self-worth, which will only make you feel worse. yes, at that second seeing you got over 100 likes may make you happy – but something small like the fact that your friend has more retweets than you do will deflate that euphoria immediately. it’s always a risky game with the media and i recommend that you do not go near it with a ten foot pole!
DO… something you love! whether it be having a dance party by yourself or wearing your favourite outfit, your self-esteem can always use a little boost. after finishing some work you can make yourself your favourite food, or watch an episode of that show you’ve always wanted to see – stay motivated by rewarding yourself every so often! it’s nice to be appreciated by you sometimes 🙂
DON’T… worry! one bad day is not the end of the world. we are all susceptible to the blues and they won’t last forever!
