A Spoken Word Poem on Racism

you can listen to me perform the poem here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYHcq3aVvyM

so i was having a conversation the other day/

and my friend said something that really rubbed me the wrong way/

because she made a joke about a racial man/

and when i asked her why, she said it was because she can/

but you can also drunk drive, and you can also smoke pot/

so just because you can, doesn’t mean you can’t not/

and yes i understand it was really funny/

and i know russell peters goes up on stage and does it for money/

but these comments can be really mean/

and i know the world is not a wish-granting machine/

but it would be nice to stop this hate/

it doesn’t matter the time, place or date/

it doesn’t matter if it’s on facebook, instagram, twitter, or kik/

it could really offensive, or just that movie white chicks/

because it all stereotypes people into one group/

and to be honest, it’s not that funny if you’re not in the loop/

so the other day, me and my friend were talking face-to-face/

and he made a comment about another race/

what if i was asian and not so good at switching lanes?

would another chinese bad driver joke fill me with pain?/

and what if i was jewish and my nose was kind of huge?/

would i have to do surgery to take refuge?/

and you know, i am a proud muslim girl/

so why am i responsible for a man on the other side of the world?/

because i am tired of being called weird/

so what if my uncle has a long beard?/

so what if my grandmother wears hijab?/

so what if my friend’s name is abbas?/

and you know what, my last name is mehdi not “meddy”/

and to fight for my rights, i’m so damn well ready/

because it shouldn’t be majority rules to get what i need/

but the government is just too busy trying to legalize weed/

because making these jokes are not cool/

and just ‘cause your friends laugh, doesn’t mean you run the school/

because being racist is not okay/

we need to stop this, and we need to stop today!!/

hope you liked it!

stay brainy and stay beautiful!
